Since 1983, the Woodstock community and visitors from all over gather for the Woodstock, Vermont Wassail Weekend, a vintage Vermont Christmas tradition with English roots.

What is Wassailing?

Wassailing is an ancient tradition that dates back to the 11th century, of going door to door to offer cheer and good health in the form of drink and caroling, in exchange for gifts.

Woodstock Vermont Wassail Weekend Tradition

This vintage Vermont holiday event brings a smile to folks of all ages who come to wassail in Woodstock for the weekend. Woodstock village is decked for the season in wreaths, garland, and lights. Visitors enjoy historic tours, carriage rides, productions and caroling, artisan fairs, visits with Santa, the equestrian parade, and lighting of the yule log (bonfire), memory tree, and luminaries.

The equine parade is the true highlight. Coordinated by High Horses Therapeutic Riding and the Woodstock Area Chamber of Commerce, riders parade through town on horseback and in carriages throughout town. Participants are encouraged to dress in Currier and Ives costumes and 19th century period clothing.

Here’s a look at the bright and sunny parade from December 10, 2022. Mark your calendar for the next Wassail Weekend!
