Ice Fishing on Mascoma Lake

My latest outdoor adventure brought me back to Enfield in search of flowing water after a bout of rain and mild January weather.

On the way to hike Bicknell Brook via the Colette Trail, I caught the sunrise over Mascoma Lake and stopped to check out the ice fishing.

If you were one of the many people fishing on the lake on Sunday, you already know what kind of morning it was.

The scene unfolding at Mascoma Lake was sublime. The sun moved in and out of clouds while tiny snowflakes glittered over a wide gradient of gray ice and layered hills. I stayed close to the shore with my 70-300mm lens, despite hearing someone say the ice is at least 8″ thick. I also brought my newly purchased Lensbaby Sol 45. This is a creative focus lens that produces a blurry, tilt-shift effect.

As morning pushed on, more and more people scattered onto the frozen lake, taking to their huts, spreading out their gear, and drilling the ice.

Bicknell Brook

Once the light show ended, I made my way to Boys Camp Road to explore Bicknell Brook. The water ran swiftly over ice and the banks were cleaned by a fresh layer of snow. What I adore about the Colette Trail and Bicknell, is that you only need to walk a short way to see an interesting turn in the brook. I like to take the trail that leads upstream toward Grafton Pond Road, which is where I captured the images toward the bottom of the page, less than a quarter mile in.
