I’m enjoying my slow, holiday break days here in the Upper Valley. The sun rises late this time of the year which makes morning light stalking much more manageable, especially when sticking around local neighborhoods to find beauty. I set out around 7 am to see if Mascoma Lake in Enfield had frozen over. While passing through Lebanon I caught a glimpse of a sherbet ombré sky behind City Hall. It was a literal #ipulledoverforthis moment.
I arrived to find Mascoma Lake covered in a glaze of ice, despite recent warm temps. I couldn’t help but think back to my winter road trip to Lake Willoughby last January when the glacial lake had not yet frozen over, which is not unusual due to its depth. I am excited for this year’s plan for a skate path at Mascoma, similar to the one at Lake Morey.
I arrived at Lakeside Park just as the sun was peeking over the hills and caught its reflection shimmering on the ice. The early light wraps all it touches in a hazy, magenta glow, like you see in the second image where the sun blankets the hillside. So quickly the sunlight turns harsh and yellow. Elusive are those few moments right before the sun rises, where it is most beautiful right before it blinds.
After my moments in Enfield, I visited Packard Hill Covered Bridge. The scenery around the bridge at the moment is not so picturesque with dirty snow and barren trees and weeds. It was the ripples and movement of the water that caught my eye. I captured quite a few variations of the flowing water and rocks in the river below the bridge. I am surprised by how the shape changes with each frame. I’m sharing a few favorites below.
