Actually, it’s no secret, but the large, elaborate gardens and architectural surprises tucked away in the woods of The Fells present a hidden gem in New Hampshire. Situated on the grounds is the John Hay Estate, a stunning look at a historical home. I’ve been quite a few times, and each time I go it’s a little bit different. The grounds are covered with diverse flowers and wildlife that change with the seasons. I made my first visit in August of 2017, and returned a few times recently to create the images you see below.

We visited once for Hay Day, which featured carriage rides and a petting zoo. Another time we made a day trip combining a stop at The Fells and a cruise of Lake Sunapee, followed by ice cream by the harbor. That was a particularly fine day! My five-year-old adores the fairy villages. She likes to peer at what others have built, and construct her own organic home for spritely visitors.

You can find all the details about The Fells on their website. Any day is a good day to go with family or on your own. There are events and programming for all. The photographer’s membership permits entrance outside regular hours, which is perfect for making images in the best possible light. I hear there is a fox family, but one too elusive for me. Perhaps next time.
