Independence Day weekend doesn’t feel quite the same as previous years, during the COVID-19 pandemic. We won’t be continuing our usual tradition of eating ice cream at Dairy Twirl and watching the fireworks in our small town in Lebanon, New Hampshire, where the fireworks aren’t lighting up the sky tonight. This is a very small thing to feel sorry about. We have our health, each other, and our livelihoods remain intact. There is so much to feel grateful for as I think of all the beautiful memories we’ve made together in the past and all that we will make in the future.

Many times we have used the extra day off to plan a summer getaway for the three of us. While places are open along the coast, mountains, and lakes of New England, we decided to keep our germs to ourselves and forego all travel plans for now.

I’m looking back to our wonderful trip to Rhode Island in July 2017 when our little was two. She discovered the joy of ocean waves, corn-on-the-cob, and a first ride (well, nap) in a convertible!

We stayed at the Marriott in Newport, and enjoyed all that was nearby and walkable while bound to the stroller. We explored Thames Street, splashed and dug in the sand at Easton’s Beach, and visited the Cliff Walk.

Then, we took the ferry to Block Island and stayed at the National Hotel. Here we toured the island via a rented convertible, visited a farm, walked the streets, and gazed at the beautiful scenery.
