Celebrate the Season in Hanover, New Hampshire with this festive, winter celebration. Hanover and Upper Valley residents (my family included!) take part in an annual holiday tradition that brings the community together to shop, dine, visit with Santa and his helpers, and stare in awe as the enormous tree is lit in the center of the Dartmouth Green.

Hanover, New Hampshire Dazzles

Main Street Hanover, New Hampshire dazzles all winter long, but there’s one evening in December that feels extra special to the Hanover and Dartmouth community. Glittering lights are strung around a bustling town filled with people streaming in and out of decorated storefronts.

What To Expect

On the first Friday night in December, Hanover businesses extend their hours and offer discounts, giveaways, raffles, and refreshments. Lou’s Restaurant and Bakery hosts free gingerbread cookie decorating. If you want to take part, plan to arrive early, this event is so popular there’s always a long line down the sidewalk! Children can visit with Santa and the Grinch at Mascoma Bank, and Harry Potter at Ledyard. Each business offers something different. Be sure to check the event schedule and stop in at your favorite spots.

In the past, visitors enjoyed the view of Hanover lit up for the holidays from a horse-drawn carriage ride around town. A new tradition is the chili cook-off on Allen Street, but the old traditions remain. The evening shines with the tree lighting on the Dartmouth Green. Afterward, visit the tent for hot chocolate and cookies, and wander over to see the large gingerbread house on display at the Hanover Inn.
