If you are looking for something to do this winter that’s truly unique, visit the frozen wonderland that is Ice Castles in New Hampshire. There’s no shortage of outdoor winter activities across New Hampshire and Vermont, with many destinations for skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and hiking. Ice Castles in New Hampshire is an experience for people of all ages that the kids are sure to enjoy.

I’ve wanted to visit for a couple years now and a friend urged me to come along with her family this February. I’m psyched to see the massive ice formations, and the wonderment on my 7-year-old’s face as we walk through the Winter Fairy Forest. I’m also excited to bring along my camera to make some interesting images at night, and to capture all the joy we expect to find here.

Preparing for the Trip

We’ll be preparing for the icy adventure by wearing our hats and waterproof gloves, boots, snow pants, and toe and hand warmers aren’t a bad idea either. Definitely don’t want to let the elements ruin our fun. Our reserved time is in the early evening, perhaps we’ll stop and grab dinner in the area before we head home. The Pemi Public House looks promising as a family-friendly meal option. One usually can’t go wrong with a Common Man restaurant, and if you like Mexican, El Charro looks tasty. Though, there appear to be upwards of 20 restaurants in the area of a variety of cuisines, including two breweries, including the Woodstock Inn Brewery, and One Love Brewery.

From reading the Ice Castles website, and seeing visitor posts on social media, here’s what you can see and do here:

Chill at The Polar Pub on Castle Grounds

After you explore the ice formations and enjoy a sleigh ride, quench your thirst at the Polar Pub. This will make for a perfect moment to snap a photo with friends, toast to the New Year, or soak in the winter wonders!

Enjoy a Private Affair

A great idea if you are looking to pop the big question (shameless plug: I’m a wedding photographer over at Courtney Cania Photography!), or want some private space away from visitors to gather with friends, or to make special memories. Book the Arctic Alcove for up to six people, which includes a sleigh ride and discounts on merchandise, as well as a secluded space to enjoy the frozen magic of Ice Castles.

Reserve Your Spot Before you Go

As I mentioned, this will be my first winter visiting Ice Castles in New Hampshire after years of wanting to visit. I’m excited to share my experience and add it to the picture show. Be sure to check the Ice Castles New Hampshire website for tickets and book your visit ASAP. Ice Castles are a wonder any time of day, but if you want to see the formations aglow, evening time slots appear to be the first to sell out.
